The objectives are threefold: (1) to examine how implicature contributes to lyrical meaning and emotional resonance, (2) to identify instances of implicature within the lyrics, and (3) to analyze the relationship between linguistic expression and thematic message. Adopting a qualitative research design and a content analysis approach, the study draws on two primary theoretical references: Analyzing Meaning: An Introduction to Semantics and Pragmatics (Textbooks in Language Sciences 5) for implicature characterization, and Grice’s Logic and Conversation as the principal framework for categorizing implicatures. The analysis identifies four types of implicature—Conventional Implicature (CI), Generalized Conversational Implicature (GCI), Particularized Conversational Implicature (PCI), and Scalar Implicature (SI)—present in both songs. Findings reveal that "She Used to Be Mine" predominantly employs Conventional Implicature (78%) and Scalar Implicature (60%), aligning with its introspective and reflective tone. In contrast, "Brave" relies more heavily on Generalized Conversational Implicature (56%) and Particularized Conversational Implicature (63%), reinforcing its motivational and empowering message. These results highlight the nuanced role of implicature in shaping both the interpretive depth and emotional impact of musical discourse.
Bejo Sutrisno Maya Risa Budi Rachmawati ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 255 270 10.37110/jell.v10i02.310 The Influence of Historical and Cultural Contexts on English Literature: A Contemporary Analysis https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/290
From the Middle Ages to the present, this research explores the significant influence of historical and cultural settings on the evolution and interpretation of English literature. This study aims to rectify this deficiency through looking at gender roles and family conflict in the film Bawang Putih dan Bawang Merah, which draws inspiration from traditional Indonesian folklore. Finding out how patriarchal values are ingrained in family dynamics and how women are oppressed and empowered is the goal of this study. Characters, dialogue, conflict patterns, and narrative structure are all examined in this study using feminist literary theory and a qualitative descriptive methodology. The findings demonstrate how the movie depicts unfairness, favouritism, jealousy, and power disparity among female characters in a patriarchal household. The motion picture. The film also emphasises the female characters' strong and defiant moments, highlighting the intricate relationship between feminist views and conventional values. The analysis comes to the conclusion that although the film perpetuates certain gender stereotypes, its narrative decisions also offer chances for feminist discourse

Dwika Putri Supandi Herlyna Herlyna Sahril Mujani ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 279 290 10.37110/jell.v10i02.291 The Role of Language in Manipulation Class in Parasite (2019) https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/292
Language is employed in building human interaction, especially in class-stratified situations. Language is examined as a form of class manipulation through speech style and politeness strategy in Parasite (2019). Theory can categorize speech and politeness, but their employment tactically is likely to differ in real-life situations as well as in narrative. The way people speak in different social settings has long been a focus in areas like pragmatics and sociolinguistics, and Parasite offers a rich example of how language reflects deeper social structures. Drawing on Martin Joos’s speech style theory and Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, the results recognize that the Kim family employs a formal and consultative style to claim social legitimacy and that intimate speech achieves emotional bonding. They also employ positive politeness for rapport-building, negative politeness for expressing deference, and bald-on-record or off-record strategies to achieve control and hide agendas. In general, the study reaffirms that language in Parasite is a tactical instrument of class mobility, manipulation, and social scheming
Cahya Happy Auriza Yulianto Herlyna Herlyna Retno Ramadhina ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 291 300 10.37110/jell.v10i02.292 Gender Inequality and Power Imbalance in Taylor Swift’s Songs “Dear John” and “All Too Well” https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/293
This study looks at how gender inequality and power imbalances in romantic relationships are shown in Taylor Swift's songs "Dear John" and "All Too Well." This research uses two theories, Raewyn Connell's Theory of Hegemonic Masculinity and Sylvia Walby's Theory of Patriarchy, to analyze the lyrics of these songs. The findings show how traditional ideas of masculinity, like emotional detachment and control, can lead to unfair relationships. The analysis also shows how patriarchy works, including emotional manipulation, male violence (both emotional and psychological), and the cultural acceptance of male dominance. These ideas are shown in the songs' narratives. The conclusion shows how Swift's lyrics strongly comment on the common issues of gender inequality and power imbalance in personal relationships. They challenge traditional ideas of male power and express the experience of women in these situations
Rana Imtiyaz Retno Ramadhina priyoto Priyoto ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 301 310 10.37110/jell.v10i02.293 Applying Minderop’s Fictional Characterization to Imaginary Friends in the IF (2024) Movie https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/294
Imagination plays a crucial role in childhood development, often represented through imaginary friends as emotional and cognitive companions. The movie IF (2024) presents a unique narrative that visualizes children’s imaginary friends and their deeper meanings. This research aims to analyze the characterization of imaginary friends. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research applies Albertine Minderop’s fictional characterization theory to examine how each imaginary friend is portrayed through name and dialogue. Data is collected through observation of the movie's scenes, character interactions, and dialogues. The findings reveal that imaginary friends are not merely fictional entities but serve as emotional representation of unspoken feelings such as grief, loneliness, and inner strength. This research concludes that IF (2024) offers a profound representation of how imaginary friends can accompany a child's psychological journey, bridging creativity, emotional growth, and the struggle of letting go.
Farhadia Syawala Fitri Sahril Mujani mashuri Mashuri ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 311 318 10.37110/jell.v10i02.294 Orion Pax’s Heroic Transformation under Oppression Using Vogler’s Hero’s Journey in Transformers One (2024) Movie https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/295
The research aims to identify Orion Pax’s journey to regain liberation from constricted environments that undervalued him as a miner and undermined him as lower class. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research identified 10 of the 12 phases of Orion Pax's transformation as a step towards his final transformation into Optimus Prime. The findings reveal that Orion oppressive environment undervalues him as a defective bot with no cog to urge him to yearn for a new life. Along the journey, he learns of Sentinel Prime's crimes, which motivate him to fight for his freedom, only to be betrayed by D-16, resulting in his untimely death. His resurrection as Optimus Prime restored the balance to Cybertron and abolished the rigid structure of Cybertron society. Ensuring freedom to the miner class of Cybertron with a new vision of equality. This study argues that Vogler’s Hero’s Journey is not bound to the traditional self-discovery structure but instead can be applied to a non- human character in oppressive settings, providing new perspectives on class struggle, labour exploitation and freedom. This research uses three theories, namely Cognitive Theory by Aaron T. Beck, Emotional Support Theory by Shelley E. Taylor, and Theory of Personal Growth by Abraham Maslow. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach, by analyzing several important scenes in the film Kim Ji Young: Born 1982. The results show that Kim experiences great inner pressure because she must carry out many roles at once as a mother, wife, and daughter-in-law, but does not get enough emotional support. This makes Kim feel depressed, confused, and sometimes even feel that she cannot control herself or does not recognize what she is doing. In addition, Kim also often blames herself and imagines bad things that are not necessarily happening. On the other hand, her husband tries to be a good listener, give her space, and keep learning to be better. Although not perfect, he seems to have the intention and effort to grow with Kim. This research shows that in domestic relationships, a sense of security and emotional support is very important so that each of us can develop and be mentally healthy.
Tia Nurhasanah Siri Isminarni Retno Ramadhina ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 333 344 10.37110/jell.v10i02.296 The Aspiration of Black Mathematicians Women in Gaining Equality towards Male Domination in the Movie “Hidden Figures” (2016) https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/297
The aims of this research is to investigate the representation of gender roles in the film Hidden Figures (2016) through the authentic experiences of three African American women, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson who were employed at NASA in the 1960s. Using Gender Role Theory, this study examines the methods these characters use to confront and navigate discrimination in a workplace characterized by male dominance and racial segregation. Using qualitative content analysis methodology, this study focuses on specific scenes that illustrate the challenges these women face as a result of their race and gender. The results show that each character faces systemic barriers, including limited access to education, inadequate recognition, and exclusion from leadership roles. However, their resilience and determination allow them to overcome these barriers. Katherine asserts her right to participate in important meetings, Dorothy teaches herself programming to maintain her relevance in the evolving workforce, and Mary defies legal barriers to pursuing a career as an engineer. This representation emphasizes the film’s core message: that perseverance and self-respect can effectively challenge and resist oppressive gender norms. Ultimately, this research not only depicts the personal struggles of these women, but also highlights the broader societal implications of challenging conventional gender roles, underscoring the importance of visibility.
Davina Salsabila priyoto Priyoto Susiyati Susiyati ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 345 352 10.37110/jell.v10i02.297 The Impact Of Social Stigma On Humanity And Human Rights As Represented In The Film Atas Nama Daun (2022) https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/298
Film documents In the Name of Leaf (2021) tells the true story of Fidelis Arie Sudewarto, an Indonesian citizen who had to face social stigma and criminalization for using medical marijuana to treat his wife who suffered from a rare disease. The study aims to understand how Jane's internal motivations, emotions, beliefs, goals, and actions represent a consistent and principled moral identity. Selected scenes and dialogues from the novel were analyzed, particularly those in which Jane faces emotional and ethical conflicts, such as her interactions with Mr. Brocklehurst, Mr. Rochester, and St. John Rivers. The analysis focuses on five aspects of moral integrity: staying true to personal values, emotional honesty, resistance to outside pressures, moral courage, and consistency between belief and behavior. The data were examined using interpretive tools from psychology, linguistics, and literary studies. Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000), Blasi’s Theory of Moral Identity (1984), and Speech Act Theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1979) provided the theoretical foundation for this study. The findings reveal that Jane consistently shows moral strength by refusing to act against her values, even in situations involving love, authority, or comfort. Her integrity is reflected in the way she speaks, thinks, and acts, showing growth from childhood to adulthood. This study contributes to the fields of literature, psychology, and education by offering a clear framework for analyzing character-based moral development. This study takes a qualitative approach using phenomenology. It was carried out in STKIP Al-Amin Indramayu, West Java, at the Al-Amin English Club, one of the student platforms. To gather detailed information regarding this platform, the researchers spoke with five interviewees. The sample was taken from representatives of semester two, four and six of the English education department who play an active role on this platform. Data for this study was gathered through documentation, interviews, and observation. In order to determine how this platform affects students' self-confidence, this study focuses on examining the viewpoints of Al-Amin English Club members. The findings demonstrated that the learning activities offered by Al-Amin English Club are pertinent to the growth of students' English confidence. In contrast to earlier research that concentrated more on the speaking abilities of the students, this study focuses directly on the topic of self-confidence in speaking English. This platform has a positive impact on pupils' confidence, according to their viewpoints. During this activity, students' confidence in speaking English increases. Furthermore, the encouraging friendship environment is another factor that keeps students motivated to learn English, particularly in the Al-Amin English Club. Additionally, the more laid-back and informal classroom environment encourages students to participate in the Al-Amin English Club learning process.
Supriyani Supriyani Kunah Kunah Selvia Dewi ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 435 446 10.37110/jell.v10i02.308 Changes in the Meaning of Foreign Languages, Regional Languages and Similar Languages in Indonesian Language https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/309
This study analyzes the phenomenon of vocabulary shift in Indonesian, which originates from three main elements: foreign languages, regional languages, and cognate languages. The focus of the study lies in the sociolinguistic relationship between the language-speaking community and this expansion. The research method uses a descriptive-qualitative approach with data drawn from various sources such as mass media, literature, and everyday conversation. The results of the analysis show that vocabulary expansion from foreign languages is often triggered by globalization and technological developments, while the expansion of the language itself reflects the language's creativity in responding to local cultural needs. On the other hand, contributions from cognate languages such as Malay appear more in the context of cultural and historical similarities. This study concludes that language expansion is influenced by social, cultural, and economic dynamics, while also demonstrating that language plays a role as a mirror of societal change. The study of changes in meaning shows that the development of Indonesian not only enriches vocabulary but also reflects the social, cultural, and technological dynamics in society.
Agus Sulaeman Kim Dong Hun ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 447 456 10.37110/jell.v10i02.309 Women, Culture, and Resistance: A Feminist Critique of Minang Matrilineal Norms in Cinta Tapi Beda https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/311
This study investigates the representation of feminist theory within the matrilineal system of Minangkabau (Minang) culture as portrayed in the Indonesian film Cinta Tapi Beda (2012), directed by Hanung Bramantyo and Hestu Saputra. The research focuses on the conflict between the protagonist, Diana, and her mother, which reflects broader tensions between tradition, gender roles, and female autonomy. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing textual and character analysis of selected scenes. The analysis applied key frameworks of feminist theory—postmodern, liberal, and multicultural/global feminism—to identify the intersections of feminist discourse and matrilineal values. The findings indicate that while the Minangkabau matrilineal system provides women with a degree of symbolic authority, patriarchal structures continue to dominate social and cultural practices. This tension is most visible in the rejection of Diana’s romantic relationship, shaped primarily by religious and cultural restrictions rather than the matrilineal framework itself. The study demonstrates that feminist perspectives highlight contradictions within the Minang matrilineal system, revealing how female authority remains constrained by patriarchal norms. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between cultural identity, gender roles, and cinematic representation in Indonesia. Future research is recommended to examine how contemporary Indonesian films further negotiate tradition and gender equality.
Sarsono Sarsono Abdulloh Abdulloh Fanny Sarah Aprilian Luthers Slamet Basuki Ikhwan Muslim ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 457 466 10.37110/jell.v10i02.311 A Jungian Archetypal Study of Main Characters in the TV Series Bridgerton Season 1 https://journal.stibaiec-jakarta.ac.id/ojs-asli/index.php/jell/article/view/312
This study investigates the psychological development of the two main characters in Bridgerton Season 1—Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset—through the lens of Carl Gustav Jung’s archetype theory. The research is motivated by the need to understand how archetypal structures shape emotional growth, internal conflicts, and relational dynamics within popular screen narratives. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach within the framework of literary criticism. Selected dialogues and narrative events were analyzed to identify the presence and function of five primary Jungian archetypes: Persona, Shadow, Anima/Animus, Hero, and Self. The analysis reveals that Daphne undergoes a transformation from conformity to societal expectations toward the assertion of a more authentic self. In contrast, Simon confronts his fragmented emotional identity by reconciling with his past, ultimately achieving greater psychological integration. These archetypal patterns illuminate each character’s individuation process and their evolving relationship dynamics. The findings suggest that Jungian archetypes not only serve as effective analytical tools for understanding character development in television narratives but also function as symbolic frameworks that resonate with audiences. By highlighting the interplay between psychological archetypes and narrative construction, this study contributes to broader discussions of how media representations provide insight into human emotional experiences.
Ikhwan Muslim Abdulloh Abdulloh Eny Suprihandani Mutia Nilda ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-09-02 2025-09-02 10 02 467 478 10.37110/jell.v10i02.312
