Students’ Perception on Pre-Reading Activities in Reading For Gist

Reading is an essential thing in English language skills. To support reading skills, it is necessary to have introductory activities before reading the texts in a classroom (pre-reading activities). Pre-reading activities are necessary to help students understand the reading texts. Reading difficulties can arise if it is not accompanied by a positive perception of pre-reading activities. Therefore, this study will aim to find out the various types of pre-reading activities in the Reading for Gist class and students' perceptions of these activities. This study uses qualitative methods with interviews and questionnaires as the tools of collecting data. The participants in this study were 39 students who took Reading for Gist class. The results of this study show that there are four types of pre-reading activities in Reading for Gist class. The perception given by most students in that class is positive. Students feel that the pre-reading activities are very helpful for them in improving their reading skills.

The Use of Busuu Application to Improve First Graders’ Listening Comprehension Achievement

This study was designed to know the significant improvement after using busuu application for listening comprehension achievement. It aimed at finding out how applying busuu application could be used to see significant improvement and significant mean difference between the students use busuu application and who did not use busuu application in first graders listening comprehension achievement at SMPN 3 Palembang. This research consisted of two variables, i.e. independent variable (busuu application) and dependent variable (listening comprehension achievement). The research was quantitative method quasi-experimental design. In this study, researcher used especially experimental group and control group. The sample of this research could be 66 students at first graders of SMPN 3 Palembang. After calculating data, the researcher concluded that students' listening can be improve both before and after using the busuu application. The mean results of the pupils' pre-test and post-tests serve as evidence for this. The result showed that there was significant mean difference on students’ listening comprehension because the t-_obtained was higher than t-_table = (3,966 > 1,997) with sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05 = .000 < 0.05. Which means that the null hypotheses (H_o) was rejected and alternative hypotheses (H_a) was accepted. Moreover, the listening comprehension was significantly improved in the experimental group. The researcher concluded that there was any significant improvement and significant mean difference in the students listening comprehension achievement at SMPN 03 Palembang after being taught using busuu application.

The Analysis of Character Building in Educational Values Found in Aladin Film Directed By Guy Ritchie

Learning media is a communication tool used to transmit knowledge, speed up the learning process, and raise educational standards. One can use movies as educational resources. Films tell a variety of tales that embody moral principles, including cultural, social, and educational principles. The 2019 film Aladdin is one option for a movie. The 2019 film Aladdin is an adaption of the 1992 original animated version. Guy Richie directed and John August and Guy Richie wrote the 2019 film Aladdin. Finding the character-building qualities in the 2019 Aladdin film and outlining how those educational values are portrayed in the film are the goals of this study. In this study, the author uses the educational value theory of Zaim El Mubarok in Hamidy (2017) which divides the value of educational consist of two namely; values of being and values of giving. Primary sources are film themselves and secondary sources are transcripts, books sources. The researchers have found in this film, several educations values can be drawn namely: 1) There are four educational values that can be learned in the section on the value of being, are: honest, brave, confidence, purify.2) There are five educational values that can be learned in the section on the value of giving, namely: loyalty, respect, not selfish, love and affection. Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) as Global Phenomenon and Their Impacts on Army’s Social Movements in Indonesia

This research aims to find out the factors behind the success of Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) as global phenomenon and the impacts they create on many social movements done by their fans called ARMY (Adorable Representative MC for Youth) in Indonesia. Many researches had been done dealing with the topic but less talked about the social movements done by Indonesian ARMY. The purpose of this study is to analyze the reason why BTS is loved by people of the universe and kinds of social movements done by Indonesian ARMY dedicated to the members. The writers used questionnaires as the instrument to collect the data and qualitative merthod to analyze it. Through analysis, the main reason of BTS, was identified as having a positive group boyband personality, smart and creative, having a sense of empathy, having an independent attitude, never giving up, loving family, and having a strong determination in life. The commitment of BTS ARMY’s causes positive impact similarly from their favorite idol.

The Factors Triggering Nanisca to Forbid the Members of Agojie to Have Families in The Woman King Film

This study investigates the factors leading Nanisca, the main character in The Woman King movie, to prohibit Agojie members from forming families. The researchers employ Feminism and Postcolonialism theories, focusing on radical feminism to identify Nanisca's motivations. Additionally, Oppression theory is utilized to depict the oppression experienced by Agojie members and other citizens of Dahomey, Mahi, and small kingdoms. The qualitative approach, along with observation and library research, is employed for this study. The findings reveal two main factors behind Nanisca's prohibition: Agojie members' negative experiences with women trafficking, sexual abuse, and verbal/non-verbal oppression. To combat these issues, Nanisca employs radical feminist strategies and enforces a rule against warriors having families, symbolizing her resistance against patriarchal oppression

This study aims to determine the values of Javanese society as reflected in Pengakuan Pariyem novel by Linus Suryadi AG. More specifically, this research is aimed to answer two problem questions, namely what the Javanese values are reflected in Pengakuan Pariyem novel.The rationality of the research is to give a better understanding of the Javanese values in Javanese. The method used in this study is a descriptive method, in the form of qualitative, with a sociological approach. In collecting the data, the writer used note-taking technique. The research applied some tools of analysis that developed in the study of literature such as Javanese Values and Cultural Studies. The result of this research brings two contributions namely theoretically and practically. From theoretically, is expected to provide more specific knowledge and information regarding Javanese values. Practically, it may provide helpful reference material for further researchers who are interested in relevant topics. The results of data analysis show that seven kinds of Javanese values are reflected in Pengakuan Pariyem novel: sungkan,halus,grapyak,isin,nrimo,polite, and humble.

the writer raises the issue of types of conceptual metaphors and the pragmatic meaning of these metaphorical expressions found in Christina Perri's songs entitled "Hurt", "Blue" and "Mothers". The aim is to introduce the types of conceptual metaphors and the pragmatic meanings contained in them to make it clear that collaboration between concept metaphors and pragmatics can be done and is becoming increasingly familiar to most people, especially in the field of linguistics. This research applies George-Lakoff's (2013) conceptual metaphor theory and Brown-Yule's (2013) pragmatics theory to find the meanings contained therein. A qualitative descriptive approach will be used in this research. The results of the research confirm that there are 3 types of conceptual metaphors in the three selected songs and in conveying their meaning, Christina Perri conveys the meaning contained in the conceptual metaphor expressions conveyed contextually not based on the background of the song lyrics created.

This research discussed about the denotation and connotation in selected songs of Taylor Swift album entitled Folklore. The researcher applied descriptive qualitative methodology by using the semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure and structuralism by Claude Levi Strauss. The data source of this study is Taylor Swift selected songs. Those songs are “Exile”, “Illicit Affair”, and “Cardigan”. The result of this research shows that there are implicit meaning in the lyrics of the songs. (1) There are the denotation meaning in selected songs. (2) There are the connotative meaning in the selected songs. (3) There are the myth showed in the selected songs. Taylor Swift connected the songs in this album one to another.

The Emotional Landscape of ‘Inside Out’: a Critical Analysis

This research topic is the interpretation of signs of emotions in the main character’s behavior. More specifically, this study aims to recognize and represent the emotions depicted in Inside Out. ‘Inside Out’ displayed five emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. Emotions in inside-out movies are interpreted by the signs implied in them. The approach used in this research is qualitative research. The qualitative method with descriptive analysis uses non-numerical data to comprehensively and accurately describe a specific event, behavior, or experience. This study uses several approaches and theories. Approaches used semiotics with Peircean theory and psychology with Schachter-Singer’s Two-Factor Theory of Emotion and cognitive arousal theory. The data were collected from scenes, scripts, and the movie’s dialogue. This research shows different meanings for signs, objects, and interpretants—the representation of basic emotions in the film ‘Inside Out.’ The result is dominant signs in cutting scenes with specified physical characteristics and clothing criteria. Therefore, emotions can arise because of physical reactions and cognitive interpretation of external stimuli. Cognitive processing interacts to drive a person’s behavior.

This study explores the challenges faced by fifth-semester translation students at Pertiwi University during the English-Indonesian translation process. Employing a descriptive research method, the investigation focuses on identifying and analyzing challenges encountered in translation. Participants, referred to as student translators, engaged in a translation test utilizing an English historical recount text. The test aimed to assess translation difficulties and was augmented by Translog, offering detailed insights into the process. Results reveal challenges encompassing lexical-semantic, grammatical, pragmatic, rhetorical, and cultural aspects. Lexical-semantic hurdles involve understanding word meanings and contextual relations, while grammatical challenges span handling idioms and addressing words with multiple meanings. Pragmatic issues delve into speaker intentions, contextual meanings, and socio-cultural considerations. Rhetorical challenges focus on translating figurative language, and cultural problems highlight expressing specific concepts in different cultures

The topic in this study is about issues of feminism, gender and stereotypes that occur in the singer’s life journey as depicted in the lyrics of the song Reflection by Lea Salonga (1998). The method used in this study is a qualitative method based on the lyrics of the song Reflection by Lea Salonga as the main data source. To analyze this song, the researcher applies feminism and sociological approaches. The results of this study concluded that the singer in the song lyric experienced a process of searching for identity while fighting for the ideal that women also have the right to stand equal to men and bear equal responsibilities without needing to feel weaker. It is hoped that this study could serve as a new reference regarding the issue of feminism and gender stereotypes in literary works

The purpose of this research is to find out analysis translation about taboo words in the movie. Taboo words is word or group of wourds that contain ambiguous or exactly inappropriate meaning. Taboo word may be not used or heard for under age. Furthermore, Taboo words might be very dangerous and inappropriate in our country, Indonesia. Whilst there are almost every western movie contains the taboo words. Maybe the purpose is to adjust with the plot or the theme of the story and to adapt with their culture or to make the movies looks natural. The movie transcript and subtitle that used is ‘Fifthy Shades of Grey”, because this movie is about a man named Grey who have a sadistic in sex, so that obviously, this movie contains so many taboo words. In this research, the methods that it used is observation and analysis of the transcript from English (SL) into Indonesia (TL), especially non-participant observation methods. Taboo words is devided into 10 types and it would be explained and there are some examples for each type. Overall, the purpose of this study is to analyse the types of taboo words and to find out how taboo words are translated from SL to TL.

This research departs from the problems that occur related to racial discrimination that occurred in America. This study aims to examine the social issue surrounding the superiority of racist violence. Finding out the types of racism exist and describing how it is portrayed in the Black Eyed Peas song “Where is The Love?” are the goals of this study. Content analysis is a type of qualitative research that was employed in this research by the researcher. Unit analysis was used to gather data from the song through words and lyrics. The themes in the data were categorized, coded, and classified. Following that, the data were interpreted using the writer's point of view. The result showed that “Where is The Love?” song contained racism in the form of prejudice, and physical violence occur in the song. The “Where is The Love?” song represents racism in America because it was based on the tragedy happened in the past where Black Americans have been treated bad by the superiority.

Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Translating Descriptive Text from Indonesian into English

The aims of this research was to find out the students’ difficulties into English and to know how the students were cope with the difficulties in translating descriptive text from Indonesian into English at the eighth grade students of junior high school Tri Dharma Palembang. The descriptive qualitative research was used in this sample of this research. The sample of this research was the eighth grade students at Junior High School Tri Dharma Palembang. There were fifteen participants of students and there was one participant of their English teacher. The data was taken by using test and interview as the instrument. The research finding showed that the highest percentage of students’ difficulties in translating was grammar (27%). the highest number of the students’ grammar difficulties was phrase (45%). The second difficulty faced by students was clarity and cohesion & naturalness (24%). The third difficulty face by students was spelling & style (14%) and the last difficulty was realizing & understanding (11%). Based on the result of students and their English teacher interview matrix, it showed that students asked their friends and teacher to help solving their problem. It could be concluded that students had difficulties in translating Indonesian descriptive text into English was Grammar and the students asked their friends or teacher to give them a help.

This study aims to analyse the verbal and visual elements in a school brochure, namely the brochure of Yayasan Perguruan Sultan Iskandar Muda, North Sumatra. The brochure of this school was downloaded from the school's Instagram regard that's chosen aimlessly. The last result of the research reveals that the brochure has all general structure which is lead, view or display, emblem (verbal), announcement, enhancer, emblem (visual), and call- and- visit information. The finding of academy or school brochure completely supports all the theories of this research. The elements of this visual and verbal support each other and cohere to convey a communication to the anthology. The communication conducted to readers come more conclusive, and it attract their interest to school as the source of formal education.

Problem-Based Learning on the Abilities of Writing Argumentation Communications of Malay-Indonesia Department Students

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of the problem-based learning model on the ability to write argumentative essays of Malay-Indonesian study program students in the 4th semester audio visual course. In this research, this research used a quasi-experimental method by conducting a pre-test and post-test in two groups. This type of experimental research method uses a nonequivalent control group design, where the experimental class is treated and the control class is not treated. This nonequivalent control group design is almost the same as the pretest and posttest control group design, only in this design the experimental and control groups are not chosen randomly. Data collection techniques use tests. Data analysis techniques start from the normality test, homogeneity test, and continue with hypothesis testing.research data,So that post-test or final test data was obtained which was then analyzed using a two-sided T test, giving results that students who were given problem-based learning model learning treatment experienced more improvement compared to students who were not given problem-based learning strategies. This means that it is in accordance with the proposed hypothesis and it can be concluded that there is a difference in the ability to write argumentative essays between students who are given a problem-based learning model and students who are not given a problem-based learning model.

This study is an attempt to determine the effect of vocabulary and grammar management on English description text writing skill at SMKN 1 Indramayu. This research is to answer the questions: 1) How are the students’ writing skills at SMKN 1 Indramayu? 2) How is the influence of students’ descriptive text writing skills at SMKN 1 Indramayu? 3) How effective is vocabulary to improve English description text writing skills at SMKN 1 Indramayu? 4)How effective is grammar management to improve English description text writing skills at SMKN 1 Indramayu? The method used is survey. The inference analysis used is descriptive correlational research and multiple linear regression. The population in this study was 266 and a sample 70 respondents were taken from grade XI. The results of this study are proven by the acquisition of Sig. = 0.000 <0.05 and F observe = 192,939. 2) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on English descriptive text writing skills, this is proven by the acquisition of Sig. = 0.000 <0.05 and T observe = 10,831. 3) There is a significant effect of grammar mastery o English descriptive text writing skills, this is proven by the acquisition of Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and T observe = 6.984.

The Objective of the research is to find out the types of moral values and to find out the most dominant type of moral value in the Children of Heaven movie by Majid Majidi. The writer use descriptive qualitative method to get the objective of the study. The researchers have collected the data from the script of “Children of Heaven” movie by Majid Majidi. In Conclusion of the researcher founding and result there some types of moral values. The categories found are 6 from Caring for other living thing and environment, 3 from Respect and caring for others, 2 from Commitment to something greater than oneself, and 1 from Self-respect, but with humbleness or respect to others, self-discipline, and acceptance of personal responsibility. Faith & Courage values don’t have any dialogue in this movie, but there is a scene for each both Faith and Courage which represent them. And the most dominant moral value occurred in the Children of Heaven movie by Majid Majidi is Caring for other living thing and environment with 6 data.

A Study on Figurative Language Used in the Selected Songs of The “Encanto” Movie’s Soundtrack

Practically, this research engages literary works to critically examine the figurative language represented in recent Disney animated films’ soundtrack, “Encanto”, which was released in 2021. Meanwhile, the urgency of this research is the need of thorough understanding of figurative language in the song’s lyrics. In relation to which, the objectives of this research is to find the kinds, the most dominant usage and general meaning of figurative language used in the selected songs of the original soundtrack of Disney’s animated film “Encanto”. As for the works of this research, it is to unpack the constructions of the figurative language through an analysis of the figuration of the Disney movie’s soundtrack. In this matter, this research analyze the lyrics which are discursively embodied in these Disney movies in complex and contradictory ways, for such and therefore Disney works on and through these bodies are then accordingly undertaken to fix and contain the ideological constructions of language, literature, and culture. Since language gives people the spirit and symbolic of expressions, in order to gather the aforesaid objectives, the researchers use qualitative method with descriptive approach, by gathering information mainly from books and international journals. The researcher discovered nine different kinds of figurative languages namely metaphor, simile, metonymy, irony, personification, paradox, hyperbole, synecdoche, and idiom. Apparently the researcher identified that the most figurative language used in such Disney’s animated film “Encanto” is metaphor.

This research found out the characterization of Narcissistic Personality Disorder on Baroness the villain on Cruella (2021) movie. In studying of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, the researchers use Qualitative research methodology and use psychological approach to examine the psychology aspect on Baroness. This research also uses two main books from American Psychiatry Association DSM – V to know the characterization of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and book The Everything : Guide to Narcissistic Personality Disorder by Goodman, Lechan Cynthia and Leff, Barbara to describe the impact of Baroness’s Narcissistic Personality Disorder to people around her. The researchers found the significant characterization which is the Grandiose of Self – Importance on Baroness’s Narcissistic Personality Disorder and the significant impacts are Narcissistic as Co – Worker and Narcissistic as Boss.

The Benefits of Literature in Developing Talent and Self-Confidence for English Club Extracurricular Students in High School Level

This study investigates the benefits of literature on the talent development and self-confidence of high school students participating in extracurricular English Club. Literature, derived from the Sanskrit word 'shastra', serves as a guide and source of information and includes various forms such as drama, poetry, tales, and speeches. Recognizing the importance of literature in developing talents and self-confidence, this study examines the role of extracurricular English Club in creating a supportive environment for students. Extracurricular activities, including English Club, play an important role in the character and academic development of young people. In response to the growing importance of English proficiency, some educational institutions have introduced English extracurricular programs to showcase students' potential and interests. This study, conducted at MAN 1 Kota Malang, East Java, used a descriptive qualitative approach to assess the impact of English clubs on students' literacy skills, self-confidence and talent development. The results showed that the English club at MAN 1 Kota Malang focuses on improving students' English skills, especially speaking. Through speaking, poetry, storytelling and drama exercises, students develop their imagination, analytical ability and general communication skills. Literature-oriented exercises help students overcome shyness, fear of making mistakes, and anxiety, and improve self-esteem. The study concludes that incorporating literature into extracurricular activities not only improves language skills, but also contributes to the development of talent and self-confidence, which are crucial for future success.

A Semiotic Analysis on Inaco Product Packaging

This study aims to identify semiotic signs present on the packaging of Nata de Coco. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research draws upon Saussure's signifier and signified theory as outlined by Chandler (2022). Through analysis, ten semiotic signs were identified on the packaging, including the overall design, company logo, Wonderful Indonesia logo, Superbrands logo, Top Brand logo, Halal MUI logo, Mr. Mutu logo, International Food Safe symbol, International Resin Identification (7 other) Code symbol, and Do Not Litter icon. These findings shed light on the symbolic elements utilized in packaging design and their significance in communicating messages to consumers.

The objectives of this study are: first, to identify Yoon Yeon Woo’s character in the drama My Perfect Stranger. Second, to find out Yoon Yeon Woo’s conflict in the drama My Perfect Stranger, and the third is to identify Yoon Yeon Woo’s role in supporting the story in the drama My Perfect Stranger. In this study, the writer of this study uses the qualitative research,because it focuses on understanding social phenomena from the perspective of the human participants in natural setting.The discussion focused on internal or a character in the drama. My Perfect Stranger is a mystery fantasy drama that tells about 2 main character in the drama went to time travel to year 1987 for uncover the serial murderer happen in Woojung-ri village and fix their future life. Hopefully this research will be useful, and in the future this research can become a source of data for future researchers who will conduct research on the same or related themes.
